Similarities between the Amazon Kindle and Star Trek PADDs?

I don't have an Amazon Kindle, but I've read a good bit about them. I'm a Trekkie, so I've seen a lot of PADDs on Star Trek, and I know that they can be used for storing information, writing, reading a book, connecting with a computer or for a host of other things. Is it just me, or could Kindle be the first version of a PADD? Any thoughts?

Yes, I do think the Kindle seems like PADD first version lol... The idea is realised!
