Body Cover Overlay

How would i make these textures with clay?
I'm making a suit of armour similar to the one from halo. The overlay's meant to be sort of stone and the underlay just completely black, and smooth. As i've just finished making a body, i was thinking i could cover it in cling-film, then paint over it. But would it work?
And how would i get a stone-like texture? Should i stick something like sandpaper over the clay bits of armour?
Are you planning on wearing this clay? Heavy fragile dry earth clay, fired earth clay, or baked polymer?
And the clay should be making a model - the armor you are going to "paint over it" - has to be thick enough to stay together and that will cover up much of what you do with the model - to have a stone like appearance you will have to apply paint to the outside, perhaps with sand mixed in for that kind of texture or because you shaped the final coat to look like stones.
