Why, when discussing BJJ or Bruce Lee, do most people go to extremes?

Either Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is the best martial art, and unbeatable, or it's worthless, and can't be used in a real fight, only in the Octagon.
Either Bruce Lee is the best martial arts master ever, or he's just an actor, and wouldn't have been able to compete with anybody today.
Is this because of popularity?
Everybody knows who Bruce Lee, and BJJ, and Jean Claude Van Dame, and has an opinion either inflated or totally negative of Karate, for that matter. Is that the price of fame, everybody puts themselves in a position to be either a ardent supporter, or a total contrarian?
great quote kitten

I think there's a whole perception out there that a martial artist has to be a tough guy. And that being a tough guy means you have to have strong opinions about things and that you have to insult and denigrate the things you don't like. This tends to correspond to a whole image of what a martial artist is supposed to be, mainly some insensitive jerk on steroids who looks down on anybody weaker than him. (Because, you know, otherwise people may think they're not all that tough and proving you're tough is all that matters).

I like this quote from Eric Hoffer:
"Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength"
