   I won't laugh, but I will answer your questions!What happens if I drop the iPod and kill it? Is all the music just GONE? Where IS IT??iPods come with iTunes software that installs on your PC. You can “rip” (convert to digital format) your CDs into iTunes, and then when you hook up your iPod, the songs get transferred to it. You really end up with 3 copies – the original CD, the copy you ripped into iTunes, and the iTunes library transferred to the iPod.I mean, there isn't a device inside the iPod that's holding all that music, right? Because it would have to be really big to hold all of those CDs.iPods are basically storage devices (hard disk drives, or in the case of iPod nano, solid-state memory chips) loaded with software to play the audio and video files stored on them. So yes, the files are actually stored in the device themselves. When you rip a CD into iTunes, the files are compressed into a smaller format, either MP3 or Apple's proprietary AAC format. A regular, full audio CD is approx. 60-74 minutes, and somewhere around 700 MB of data. When the entire thing has been ripped from the CD into iTunes, it takes up considerably less space (something like 45-50MB, or roughly 10% of the original size) without sacrificing any noticeable audio quality.Also, what happens when the inevitable happens and the iPod is not being used anymore?Digital audio is going nowhere.
