Converting Ereader Files

What kind of text file is used by sony ereaders?

There's lots of places online that offer free ebooks for download. A friend of mine has a Sony ereader and I'd like to be able to put them onto it for her, but she has no idea what kind of file they are. Also is there maybe a way to convert them into the kind of file it uses?

To anyone getting into ebooks I recommend the free software Calibre It is an ebook management program, completely free, freuquently updated, that gives you the ability not only to catalog your books, but also to upload them to a number of devices, and to convert to different formats. This is a link to the info on the formats it converts to and from: http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual/faq.html#what-formats-does-app-support-conversion-to-from

Bear in mind that in order to be able to do any conversions, the book has to be DRM free. I can't explain how to strip DRM as it is illegal to do so and I could get in trouble for doing that in an open forum like this. Many ebook fans strip the DRM from their purchases to be able to read them in multiple devices.

I own a Sony PRS 505 and I pretty much only use the Sony software for uploading when I purchase a new title. My model of SONY uses EPUB and PDF only. Am not entirely certain Sony has expanded the reading options, and you don't indicate what model your friend owns. However, I am certain EPUB and PDF are among the formats whichever model she owns can read.
