Cover Amazon Kindle

Should I ask for an Amazon gift card for christmas or the Kindle itself?

Seeing as my father is rather reluctant to buy the Kindle device itself from Amazon, I was thinking of asking for at least a $300 gift card from Amazon. (Where I live that is about £180).
So then, I'd be able to purchase the Kindle device aswell as a cover and a few Kindle books from the Kindle store.
Do you think this is better than asking for the Amazon Kindle when I can just use the gift card for extra things to support the Kindle?

I see what you mean ~Camryn~, however if I let him choose, say he opted for the $200 it wouldn't be enough for the Kindle. Whereas with $300 it can buy the Kindle device, leather cover and a few Kindle books which should be fine.

Go for $300 gift card because kindle is just for $259

Just kidding, well Kindle is a great option but better to research before you buy and compare with other devices too.

I have a Kindle e-book question..?

I just got one for Christmas and haven't bought any books yet, so this may be the case with all e-books...

Until I get my Amazon account up and running, I've been getting books from Project Gutenberg, etc. These books are in public domain and therefore free. However, they don't have covers. Is there a way to create covers for these, or do you have to buy the book to get a cover? I'm really confused..
Thanks. I didn't know if Amazon did the same. As long as they have the name, I'm happy. There was one that I downloaded that didn't even have that, but I found it on a different site with it.

A lot of ebooks are sold w/o covers, because the art for the original book is licensed separately from the text. And Gutenberg was originally all about the text; art is secondary. To add a bookcover, you have to edit the ebook file; how to do that depends on what format it's in.

Calibre, a free program at http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net will let you add covers to .epub (and a few other formats) ebooks. I think Mobipocket creator from http://www.mobipocket.com/en/downloadSoft/ProductDetailsCreator.asp will let you add them to .mobi books, which is what the Kindle prefers. (Mobi, .prc and .azw are the same type of ebook; Kindle's .azw format just has a different type of DRM.)

You can get free ebooks at a lot of sites besides Gutenberg-- http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Free_eBooks has lists of dozens of free ebook sites, both downloadable and read-online ebooks.

Some of the largest are at www.munseys.com, www.feedbooks.com and www.manybooks.net. (I'd give links, but there's a limit on how many links can go in a single answer.)

http://www.teleread.org/free-ebooks/ is Teleread's list of free ebook resources.

http://www.smashwords.com is a self-published ebook store, but it has a lot of free and "pay what you like" books. And http://www.fictionwise.com is a standard ebook store that sells lots of non-DRM'd books; they're the ones tagged "multiformat," and those can be downloaded in ~14 different formats, including Mobi/PRC for the Kindle.
