Digital E Book Reader

e-book question - how do I read?

I need a particular book tonight and have found that I can buy an e-book online from Waterstones. My question is, if I pay and download this ebook, do I need a special reader to read it or does it just download and open as a document for me to read. The Waterstones website mentions installing Digital Editions if you don't already have it - is this software that you need in order to read the book or what, it doesn't explain.

I believe that Waterstone's uses Sony's Ebook Library Software to download ebooks - the software allows you to read ebooks on your PC and to transfer ebooks to the Sony Ebook reader which Waterstone's sells. Adobe Digital Editions allows you to read DRM protected books - the ones that Waterstone's sells - without this additional software you can't read the books - typically Adobe software is installed by connecting to the internet.
As far as I can gather, ebooks are downloaded to My Documents; you then use the Sony Ebook Library Software to import the ebook and optionally, to transfer it to a connected ebook device.

These sources mostly contain classic works which are out of their copyright phase or ones whose authors have agreed to put them online.
There is also New Free Books which contains the full text of many new and popular books that the authors have posted online:

If you are looking for bestsellers or more titles (as well as ones you can put on your ipod) the best thing to do would be to ask at your local library because many of them are now offering these titles for free with their library services. If yours currently doesn't, suggest that they do (more and more of them are doing this.)

   You'll need an ebook app. There are several different ones, some free, some not.

   Stanza is one of the more popular free ones, and it reads several different types of ebooks. You can get it at and it reads most of the currently available formats (although it can have problems with specific files, depending on formatting).
