Is a translation of an eBook copyright infringement?

I am doing this translation job for a client. I am supposed to get paid for translating an eBook from English to German. I don't think that he's the author of that book. I thought he just wanted that book translated s he could read it in German. But now he wrote me that he wants to publish it on the internet and sell it as a completely new book in a different language! I am about halfway through with translating that book. My question is - should I continue and finish translating it, and get paid for my translation services, or am I risking to get in serious trouble for intellectual property- and copyright infringement?
Please help!

ps: He also told me that he wanted parts of the book edited and deleted some parts of the book.

A translation is a "derivative work" and you need consent from the original copyright owner.

You can get in trouble, just for doing your part, even if it was not your idea. Editing the work it's even worst.

Now if the book is in the "public domain" (meaning that the copyright expired) then you can do it.

If the book has a copyright, then GET OUT before you get into a big lawsuit. I wouldn't be surprised if that guy later claim in trial that it was YOUR idea.

If the book was already published then it wont be very hard to find out who was the author and if still has a copyright or not.

Still you are supposed to get paid for your services.

How can I build a wooden chair?

I would like build a wooden chair, but I have no idea how to start. I want to make myself, I have the tools I can buy wood, neils and other things that I need, but do you know a website or an ebook with some instructions? it doesn't matter the type of the chair. and the instructions or the plan can be in english, Italian, french, spanish or german, i can read them.
