Can a Apple iPod Touch be a ebook reader as well?

I know it said it has a app for it but can it really do the job? Also I read you can buy book form sony, B&N and ebook,com type place as well as download from your library with the Apple iPod Touch app's. Again is this true. Sorry so just making sure it does what I need it to do before buying it as a gift. Thank you for any help.
