Simple cheap text hand held display (PDA)?
I have a text catalog of around 200 pages which changes frequently. Printing costs are high and I thought it would be cool to have an electronic catalog instead. It doesn't have to be very fancy, just monochrome text, and ability to sort by a field and some search capability. A PDA (palm) or eBook Reader would do but they are too expensive, and have too much capability. Also, my customers would steal them... Finally the device should be somewhat rugged since to be used in a bar/restaurant environment. Any ideas?
Online solution is not feasible, catalog is for a karaoke song book - It has to be available to the bar patrons onsite.
Why don't you just put your catalog online?
It would seem MUCH less expensive than trying to deal with lost, broken devices. It isn't just the cost of the devices, it's warehousing, shipping, dealing with people who 'just can't figure it out', how do you load a changed catalog to a device your coustomer already has, etc.
That way, you could actually TAKE the order ONLINE, Plus, changes would be accomplished by merely changing a database entry.
Alternately Create it to as PDF file, then burn it to a CD.
Either way, you let the customer deal with his own hardware problems.

How many laptops can you connect to a wireless router at the same time?
Presuming that you're only doing basic things like downloading email or reading a news page so there much of a problem sharing the bandwidth, how many laptops (or other devices) can the average home router (The type that comes free with a cable Internet package) manage at a single time?
For example, suppose you've got a couple of netbooks, an ebook reader and an iPhone all connected at once, or you invite some friends over for a study session and they have 10 laptops between them. Can they all connect at once (even if it is slow)?
When you set up your wireless router, you have to define an IP range. The IP addresses within that range will be represented by four numbers separated by periods like: 192.168.0.100
Each of the number can only go from 0 to 255. The first three numbers have to be same for all the computers. The last number has to be unique for each computer. The router itself uses one of those numbers.
So the most computers you could hook to a router (both wired and wireless) is 254. After that you would run out of addresses.
Now, you would probably use up the band width long before that. You will notice it getting slow around 5 units, crawling at 10 and pretty much down to a standstill at 15 to 20. But if all you consider is the technology, the answers is 254 devices (counted both wired and wireless).

Many, many thanks Andy!!! Your survey helped me enormously in my search for a suitable provider.
I've released freeware but am a complete novice to publishing ebooks and shareware using e-commerce providers. I've written to Avangate and Fastspring asking for guidance. Avangate was very helpful but unfortunately, Fastspring was not at all. I would like to publish two “know-how” ebooks, after having conducted thorough and in depth research into their subject matters, but am unable to do so without having answers to my queries. I even asked a member of the family who has PhD in computer science and a very successful company but he could not answer my questions as he has never released shareware. I think e-commerce companies should have a tab on their sites dedicated to providing full information to novice authors and developers like myself. Below is my email to them:
“I'm thinking about creating the books in ePub format using the Mac application Sigil and that users would be able to read them on their computers and ebook reader devices. I'm in the dark regarding a few issues and I would be very grateful if you could explain them to me in detail.
1. I've released freeware in the past but don't have any idea about releasing shareware. To be more precise – what is the licensing mechanism? What are the licensing options? Do I have to do something with an ebook, for example, add a script in order to make it ask for and deal with the license key or just upload it as it is and you do the rest? Does your website automatically generate random keys based on the name of the product and the customer's details? Do you keep a list of customers and their respective license keys? How it is possible to make a refund to a customer who wants to “return” the book if he has already been issued with a key?
2. My biggest concern is that people would be able to copy from or convert the format of the books – for example, using Calibre application – and then redistribute them, thus circumventing the licensing mechanism. Does this mechanism prevent them from doing this? Do I need a DRM system? If I do, what is the type of DRM, its mechanism and its cost? I understand that DRM is not supported by many ebook reader devices and freeware computer applications, is this the case?
3. Apart from people being able to find the ebooks on my website, how can I promote them? What is the difference between resellers and affiliates and what is the mechanism for employing them? Is it possible to use a company like Amazon as a reseller?
Many thanks in advance for your time and advice.”

I've mentioned quite a lot about college textbooks on the Kindle here:
I'll also suggest you to read this review from a top reviewer, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle and also why it is worth especially at the end of the review:
Hope this helps.
