What will the standard DRM free, play in any ebook reader standard be? pdf?
I think that PDF and EPub will fight for being "the" ebook format for quite a while, and neither of them will become the only standard the way MP3 has for music.
Music files are all coming out of the same devices: speakers. But ebooks are being displayed on many different kinds of devices, and some ebook formats are better than others for each device.
For reading on a 21" screen, PDF with its fixed pages and nice typography is nice. For reading on a 3" iPhone, it's useless, and the reflow abilities of ePub are much better. For 6" ebook readers, PDFs are troublesome because most of them aren't made with pages to fit those screens. They could be, but nobody expects publishers to start offering their commercial ebooks in sizes that fit ebook readers instead of matching the originals.
It's a debate that the Mobileread forums regularly go over.
