Inexpensive Ebook reading device?

I am looking for an Ebook reading device under the price range of $50.00. I found an iRiver for $59.00, but I want to go lower. Has anyone seen one around this price, or am I a wishful, frugal person (that last remark was rhetorical, by the way)?
I found out that one can read PDF files on one's PSP!

You won't find one under fifty. In fact, you won't find a dedicated reader for less than $199. Anything else is a device with some other primary purpose that can read SOME e-book formats, not all, probably not many; in which case it becomes a problem to find e-books at who knows what kind of prices.

Wireless Reading Device: Support Service Review

Wireless reading devices are proving to be very popular. Based on the fact that  the most popular wireless reading device was sold out and had been out of stock for nearly four months substantiates this observation. Being popular, the concern of those who had purchased the wireless reading device and those who are about to join them would be whether there is reliable support service for the product. As consumers, we are well aware of the fact that post support service usually does not match the marketing and sales hype.

In reviewing the customer experience with the most popular wireless reading device, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that the majority of users had a positive impression. Though many of those who had posted their issues in forums stated that they did not receive responses from the vendor, this was attributed to the vendor electing to respond directly to the users. It is worth noting that it is best to also raise issues directly with the vendor in addition to posting them in the relevant forums. To be fair to the vendor, this would enable them to urgently pick-up the issue and act on them rather than hope that they would be monitoring the relevant forums and be on the look-out for issues raised.

Among the various customer experiences reviewed, were comments on:

  • The responsiveness of the vendor to a customer who stated that even though he regarded his issue as a minor one, the vendor offered a replacement.
  • No hassle and easy cancellation of orders that were wrongly placed or had charges reversed even though the error was that of the user.
  • Immediate response and solution to a technical problem even though it was reported on a Sunday.
  • Prompt responses to all inquiries on the workings of the wireless reading device.
  • Response to a forum post on the issue of connectivity. The response was through a phone call to gather details. The follow-up was an e-mail that informed the customer that a brand new unit was being shipped out.. The customer reported that the brand new wireless reading device was working great.
  • Courteous, speedy and effective response to a duplicate charge which was speedily rectified.

It is indeed heartening to note the above customer comments especially when there is a woeful lack of follow-up support and service in many other offerings. This includes products other than wireless reading devices. It is reassuring for customers to know that it is worth purchasing their wireless reading devices from established and reputed vendors. Above all, it is best to purchase products that enjoy customer endorsement and proven support services. Learn more of one such wireless reading device.

eReader is also available for the Palm OS, Windows Mobile, Pocket PC, Symbian, and desktop Windows and Mac.

Mobipocket is also available for most portable devices, including BlackBerry and several dedicated ebook reading devices. No iPhone support yet.

Stanza is a really exciting app. I'm hoping it is ported to the new Palm Pre when it comes out–I am most likely going to get one. I dare say eReader will be ported and might even come with the device, as it has with most Palm OS devices.

Oh, and here's a list of Eliza Haywood's books at Wikisource, including the text for another book. The anti-Pamela! That's two Pamela parodies I'm aware of (Henry Fielding also wrote one called Shamela).

Reading on a smartphone or other portable device is a great way to try ebooks–that's how I started. I prefer my dedicated eInk device for extensive reading, however, as it's much easier on my eyes. While my Treo has a camera, and it's okay for unexpected snaps, I would never use it as my main camera for important photos–my Canon point and shoot is vastly superior, and most serious photographers get digital SLRs. Same with ereader devices, I think–for serious work, you need a device that is made for the task. For those of us who read quite a bit, if we're going to get serious about ebooks, a dedicated device such as the Kindle, Sony Reader, or my Cybook are the best for the job. But I keep Jane Austen's books and a few others on my Treo for emergencies! :-) ]]>
