Ebook Screen

Why would anyone want to read an ebook?

I got a free romance ebook when I joined this club and I checked up on it and in word it would have come to about 160 pages and 80,000 words (the same book coming to like 350 pages in novel form). Why would you want to read something like that on a computer screen? I think I'd be crosseyed by the time I was finished with it. lol.

well, in my younger days I used to read several fanfictions a day. Granted they weren't 80,000 words long....well, some of them might have been but I guarantee I didn't read it all at once as most of them were still being written.

Anyway, I can see how a younger person who spends a lot of time on the computer might be into it. And if they have a comfortable desk where they can relax and read, it could be OK. I however have a laptop that I most of the time am hunched over lol. I would not enjoy reading that much on this screen.

I suppose too that ebooks are cheaper and instant. And you can print out the chapters at a time? I dunno. That is a lot of paper and ink haha.

I guess it is something that is an acquired taste. Like beer or coffee.

This is what I've been looking for, big time. It seems that some companies are finally getting the idea that maybe note taking is a good add on for an ebook reader. For quality products for this, however, we've still got a few years to go.

For now, however, there is the Sony Reader Touch Edition 600 and the iRex iliad. The newer iRex that will be released in the USA soon doesn't yet support note taking, but supposedly it might eventually. The older ones had issues with lack of support (overseas) and low battery life (10 hrs or so). The iRex iliad had the best note taking abilities of e-ink readers. The Sony Reader 600 has a limited note taking, sorta like writing on an index card without lines?

In the next year, there will be some other possible products coming out like this. The Asus Reader might have note taking abilities. The Plastic Logic reader might also have note taking abilities.

The item I'm looking forward to is currently "titled" the Microsoft Courier. It's supposedly going to be like having access to multiple moleskin notebooks in one...with internet abilities as well, like OneNote or some of the Journals. Unfortunately, the Courier may just be an idea and not really in the works.

The above doesn't take into consideration tablet slates nor convertible tablets. Mostly looking at e-ink products with a couple of similar non e-ink items (asus and courier).

Oh, and I almost forgot, Asus has a tablet edition either recently out or coming out soon.

One thing to keep in mind with most of these is that they are touch screens, meaning that if you write you cannot rest your hand on the screen. This will likely create problems and annoyances. This is a problem with many umpcs, netbook tablets, and ebook readers capable of note taking.

As for me, I'm looking at purchasing a sony reader touch 600 tonight (I found your question during one of my searches for reviews on readers and note taking). However, I'm also aware that I will be purchasing a better item probably next year if not maybe by the end of this year (supposedly when asus reader might be available).

I did purchase the Sony Reader Touch Edition 600. The note taking abilities on it aren't really suitable for lectures, school, nor business. Though decent for capturing names, numbers, map directions, to do lists, and such. Unfortunately, too, using the note taking options uses the battery power a LOT faster than just reading a book. I don't regret my purchase much, as it IS a type of product that I want to show my support for.

According to what I was told when purchasing the reader, the asus tablet (non e-ink) should be available in the usa for christmas this year. (I don't know about other places.) The other readers are looking at supposedly the first half of next year. And the Courier? *sigh* Can I dream for it to be real and available by christmas 2010? lol

If you really need something soon, I would suggest a netbook like tablet. (and then save some money up for the Courier, lol). Good luck. Let me know how you've chosen, please.
