They are basically like how you will point at words and say them out loud so your child memorizes them, the readers work the same way. They point to the word with the reader, the reader says the word, the child repeats the word to memorize it. Some children just don't pick up words as fast as others. I know when I was younger I had a learning disability where I needed to hear the words said while I read them and I would have to repeat several times to learn what i was reading. My oldest son is the same way. The teachers here send home a note saying to point to the word and say them as we read them then point to the words again and have the child try to read them so they learn to read that way. So I am all for the reader things provided parents are also involved in teaching and they are just relying on a "toy" to do the teaching.
