Do you need credit on file for all eReaders?

A few days ago I took the jump and bought a nook. In my excitement it took me a bit to see that they limited the ways you could buy books. I don't have credit and nor do I really believe in having a form of it now in my life. To use the nook they need a credit number on file in you Barnes and Nobel account,even for the free eBooks. To get around this I tried adding my Gift card amounts to my account in a attempt to buy a book for my nook....you still need to enter a credit number, even to use a gift card. And in any other buying situation a card number is not needed to use a gift card. I give up on in trying ways to get around it and the product itself but am still interested in owning a eReader....are they all like this? Is there a product that does not need a credit number on file to get the free books. Or maybe one that only asks for it when paying for a product is necessary.

You don't need a credit card for the Sony Reader nor to buy e-books from Borders, which are compatible with the Sony devices. Unfortunately, Sony has just announced a new line-up that won't hit the market for a couple more weeks and one of the three isn't available until November.

You can also use gift cards at Amazon for Kindle e-books without a credit card but the Kindle doesn't support borrowed library books so if you're all about the freebies, you need to be aware of that.
