eReaders? Which one should I purchase?
I am an avid reader and a bookworm. This holiday season I have decided to purchase an eReader so that I can FINALLY stop luging around five or ten of my favorite books everywhere. The only problem is that I am unsure which eReader to get. I have looked online and I am overwhelmed by the number of eReaders that I have found. I have already ruled out a couple of eReaders for purchase like the kindle (don't have an amazon account, not my style) and the nook. I have been able to narrow it down to the sony reader touch and the wireless kobo, but now im back at square one: WHICH ONE DO I GET. If anyone that knows a thing or two about these two eReaders and can help me would be great. I really wanna make this purchase. thanks =)
P.S. I have an account with Borders, and I heard that the sony reader can only purchase books from THEIR website not other retailers (Borders, Amazon etc.) If anyone can shead some light on this that would be greatly appreciated.
Forgive me for bursting your bubble, but you've narrowed your horizon to the worst two choices on the market - Borders and Sony. Sony has never been a contender for any comparison by anyone as they only have like 5 books in their Ebook store and their devices are way overpriced. Borders is behind Kobo in US and as you might of heard, Borders is on a brink of bankruptcy. Kindle and Nook are the only devices to be considered as their eBook stores have over a million of free public ebooks as well as over a million of ebooks that you need to pay for available.
Having that out of the way, you should then decide which screen you want: e-Ink or LCD. It depends on what you're reading. If just black & white novels then the better one would be Kindle or e-Ink Nook from Barnes & Noble. If you read electronic magazines or college text books with a lot of color graphs and charts or children’s' books with a lot of pictures then the better would be Nook Color LCD from Barnes & Noble. Then, you should understand the limitations of e-Ink eReaders - they are limited to be black & white for now they "blink" at each ebook’s page turn, they're not too good for web browsing, they need external light source for reading when dark, and they cannot handle videos.
Whichever device you choose, here's the advantages of the Nook’s (both e-Ink black & white and Nook Color) over Kindle:
- Any Barnes & Noble store provides free Wi-Fi to Nook's
- Nook allows to lend books for 2 weeks to friends or to your other devices that run B&N app (PC, MAC, Android phones, Apple iPhone and iPad, etc.) Barnes & Noble allows (when you walk in with the Nook to B&N store) to read any available eBook for free while in the store via free provided in the store Wi-Fi. With Nook, while in BN store you get exclusive articles from top authors, and great offers including cafe treats and unique deals.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for library ebooks.
- Nook (unlike Kindle) can be used for renting text-ebooks.
Nook Color is worth mentioning separately as this is a hybrid Android eReader/tablet device, something between Kindle and iPad. Even though Nook Color has LCD touchscreen, it's a new generation screen which is anti-glare coated and is better performing in sunlight and produces less glare all of which are dooming reading on iPad. Also, the screen is amazing and readable/viewable at wide angles.
Overall, Nook Color is more than e-Reader as you can also watch video and use Android applications on it. It's a hybrid device, much more than just an e-Reader but not a full tablet as it doesn't have a camera. If all you want is to read novels, Kindle (or the original e-Ink Nook) might be better for you. If you want something more from your device at half of the price of iPad or Galaxy tab, then Nook Color is your best bet.

Nook Prices Reduced By Barnes and Noble: Amazon Counters With Kindle Price Decrease
It had to occur at some point now it has. appreciably reduced the price tag on its Nook ebook reader today to $199 and while doing so brought in an even cheaper $149 Wifi-only Nook, causing a price battle with Amazon. The race to 'free' in ebook readers is upon us today since the normal Nook was lowered from $259 to $199 by Barnes and Noble (BKS). The main news however, is that they unveiled a fresh device which costs only $149 but could only employ Wifi to download in books.
The portable ebook reader is moving to the razor, while the eBooks are the blades. However the expense of accessibility for high quality eReaders dropped over $100 today. That opens up this market to a lot more people who might have before held back at the cost of a portable handheld ebook reader. This group includes this writer. I have liked the nook since the 2009 Christmas season after they hit the market with a bang. Now, using the new price, ownership may become a reality.
In one more marketing and advertising linked move, Amazon has the very first time signed a contract that has a retailer, Target. The Kindle will now be for sale by Target.com as well as local Target stores. For the first time, prospective Kindle owners will be able to take a Kindle for a test drive before purchase. This has been a big deal breaker for many which includes me. Target stores have a display model in its stores. The nook has in the past only been readily available on line and at Barnes And Noble stores. B&N just announced an agreement to showcase the nook eReader in BestBuy stores. Both Target and BestBuy will give you financing programs via their store credit cards.
The B&N announcement stimulated Amazon (AMZN) to a fast reaction to today's news and also to lower the buying price of its Kindle from $259 to $189, inserting its price squarely in between the two Nook models. Since these eReaders droped in price, they aren't really just stand-alone products listed like laptops, but electronic equipment priced closer to Audio players. These gadgets won't be just fighting against each other. Apple (AAPL) also refreshed their iphones and $199 ($173 street) ipod touch to use Apple's ebook store, iBooks.
To help befuddle concerns, both Amazon and Barnes and Noble have apps on Apple's iOS system allowing users to read their subject material. Even though the $499 iPad is an alternative price league, but still draws major eReader shoppers.
While your Nook runs on Android, Amazon has the benefit of their Kindle app on the Android platform, helping to make with an interesting situation: Should the Android Market may be hacked/sideloaded upon the Nook, would you be ın a position to read through Kindle books on Barnes and Nobles' eReader?
Other electronic ebook reader makers were silent. Sony eReaders number in price from $169-$350. Borders a short while ago sold its Skiff eBook venture to News Corp.
