Do you have to pay for books for the eReader and/or Stanza app for iPhone/iPod touch?

Hi, I am getting an iPod touch for Christmas, and I was wondering if you have to pay for books for the eReader and/or Stanza app, even if you already own the book.

there are a number of catalogs as part of stanza application when its downloaded.
some of these allow free book downloads.
