Does turning off the well hurt the water heater?

I am currently in the process of switching out my water tank (from the well) because there is a tear in the side. For the next two days I plan on switching off the pump in the well so it won't be stress the tear, and only turning it on when i need water. Will this hurt the water heater?

When I turn on the well from the breaker I normally hear weird noises from heater. Probably from heating up more water?

It can. The water heater must always have water in it while on. Opening a valve anywhere in the home can drain the water level to an unacceptably low level. Each time you turn off your well pump turn the water heater off also.

Is it necessary to have a block heater or battery warmer when living in Calgary?

I just moved to Calgary from Vancouver last month and only plan on living here till next May. I am wondering if it's worth investing into a block heater, or just take the transit on those days when its -20? If I was living here for awhile, I would just get it done, but since I'm only here for one winter, is it worth getting, or be miserable? Lastly, how much do they go for to purchase and install? Thanks ahead!

If you have a GM product from 1993 or newer, odds are you already have a block heater.

I live in Southern Ontario, and when I park outdoors I plug me block heater in all the time. You get heat MUCH sooner.
