E Ink Ebook Reader

Kindle and other e book readers....?

I'm looking to get myself an ebook reader, but need some advice. I've seen the amazon kindle, which I understand can only be used with amazon ebooks. There are other e book readers that I'm interested in, particularly waterstones own ereader. It has the same type of e ink display as the kindle, but it uses ebooks in pdf format.
there seems to be lots of different sites to download ebooks from, so availabiltiy shouldnt be an issue...or is it? I want to be able to use whichever reader i buy to view medical refernce books too...such as formulary etc. Any ideas what to go for?

Hi, I have an older Sony eReader.

Availability for eBooks varies depending on which eReader you have, namely a Kindle, or any other eReader. My own can take PDF, Word, JPEG, and the standard eBook ePub files as well as others, wheras the Kindle takes everything the same BUT the ePub file. Since I got my eReader two years ago, I've noticed that ePub files for eBooks are far easier to come across than Kindle editions. Some of the free websites I use have only just started to provide eBooks in Kindle format, whears ePub format has always been available.

For medical texts.. I'm not sure. Certainly if you are looking at medical journal articles, you should be able to download them in PDF format and view them that way regardless of which eReader you purchase - I believe most can take PDF format. If you want to use the articles though, check out the latest Sony ereaders - they both have a stylus that comes with them so you can highlight them and whatnot, unlike mine which at two years old has no stylus. Others might have a stylus, but I'm not sure - check the iRiver too. For atcual textbooks though - best check them out individually.

There's also something else to consider with the Kindle - whereas with other eReaders you can talk to the manufacturer and the people in the shop you bought it from (Waterstones has an eReader FAQ section online on it's website too), no one on the High Street will know anything about the Kindle, simply because no one else can sell it. It depends on whether you want to talk to a real live person or not if something goes wrong or you have a query.

Best thing to do first is to think about what texts you want it for, then check out some main titles and see how readily available they are in PDF, ePub and Kindle format.
