Where should I begin learning how to use Adobe Photoshop?
Hi,
I have no earthly idea how to use Adobe Photoshop, but am amazed at the things that can be done. I mess around on the internet, creating little dinky web pages, but would like to learn how to use Adobe to the fullest in order to create web graphics.
Where would I start? I don't mind paying a monthly fee or buying some sort of program or DVD collection, but if I'm going to spend money then I definately want to make sure that it is worth it and not something that just drags on and on.
If you've never used Photoshop, you would benefit greatly from an introductory workshop. If you have a university or community college near you, get their catalogs and see if they offer such classes. Community colleges are particularly good at this, often offering short courses or weekend workshops to get you started, and the cost would be relatively low. The advantage of taking such a workshop is that is hands-on with a live person who can directly answer questions for you and show you things that can be hard to follow in a video tutorial.
Next I would consider a couple of books. There is the Photoshop for Dummies book (get the book for whatever version you have). It's a pretty basic reference book, intended for beginners. Another good one is the Adobe Photoshop Visual Quickstart Guide. I like Visual Quickstart Guide series. A third one to consider is the Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book. The Classroom in a Book series is from Adobe itself, and each one is set up with a series of tutorials that build on each other to get you going with the program. It comes with a CD that contains the relative files for the tutorials.
One other source that I have not used myself but comes highly recommended is Lynda.com. It is an on-line video training site that provides instruction in many different programs, including Photoshop. You can try a couple of the videos to see if you like it, and then they have different subscription levels (I believe the yearly subscription allow you to download the videos and related files so you can use them whenever you want.)
After you've had some training to get you going, then I would look at YouTube and other on-line resources. The reason I say this is that although there are good tutorials out there, many if not most of them assume you have at least a basic knowledge of how to use Photoshop, and if you don't, they can be very hard to follow. That said, there are also podcasts you can download for free with all sorts of Photoshop tutorials. Personally, I love the work of Bert Monroy: he is Master Photoshop Artist. You can find his free podcast either through iTunes or at http://www.revision3.com/pixelperfect. He really does some very cool stuff with Photoshop, and once you understand the basics, his tutorials are not only educational, but entertaining.
