Horses travelling for 10 hours?
I have got two ponies who will be making about a 10 hour drive in a float (angle loader). What can I do to make them more comfortable during the journey. They always travel well but haven't made a journey this long before. What protective gear should they wear . Should they wear covers? Do they need a hay net? We don't really want to keep stopping so any tips would be really helpful!
Just make sure they are comfortable. Use a hay net and check them at least every 3 hours. Horses on trailers for too long can get travel fever from standing in one place for too long. They should be fine for 10 hours. I shipped two of my favorite horses from Cleveland to Nova Scotia and the truck broke down. It ended up taking them 60 hours and I didnt find out until many years after that they were okay. The lady never answered my calls so I thought the worse. I just found out on the internet. My prayers were answered. Good luck.

Aircraft noise and ear damage to baby?
Does any one know if being approx 50-100 meters from a moving (Boeing 717?) could cause hearing damage to a baby? I recently travelled with my infant and we had to walk across the tarmac and line up literally right next to a reversing aircraft. The noise was so loud that everyone had to cover their ears, the ground crew were in arms reach and they all had protective hearing gear on. The noise hurt my ears and they were ringing after and I was unable to cover my poor babies ears because I was carrying her as well as a few bags and pillow, I managed to cover one side with the pillow but she was very distressed. I am appalled by this incident.
I agree with the above poster. Such short exposure shouldn't cause permanent damage.
The aircraft handlers are out there all day, prolonged exposure standing even closer to noisy aircraft; so their ears need protection.
Usually ground crews will not allow passengers on the tarmac near an airplane which has started up. On more than one occasion as a passenger we had been asked to either stay in the plane, or stay in the terminal while an aircraft was starting up or taxiing in.
Unfortunately, in such an industry that is far more cutthroat than most, safety often takes a back seat to on-time arrivals and departures. Any self-respecting airline will go to great lengths to provide gates for passengers; but it is usually the airport's problem if none are available.
The 717 is actually a very old aircraft, and as such is pretty noisy. 50-100 meters is a pretty good distance however... the noise would have been rather diluted. Unless the aircraft is actually taking off, there should not be any permanent damage. If it is of great concern to you, however, don't go about asking yahoo answers, see a doctor instead.
