what exactly is an ebook reader?

I love to read and i have been thinking about getting one of those ebook readers. They seem super cool but i don't know much about them except that you can read tons of books whenever you want. since they are a little pricey i want to know all about them before i buy it, like which brand is best, how they work, what exactly do they do, how to use it, etc. If you own one would you please share your experience with us, thanks!
