Is it possible to have reading difficulty after slight brain injury?

8 years ago (this coming January) I drove my car over a patch of black ice and skid into a tree going about 40mph. The drivers side hit and the left side of my head broke the drivers side window. I dont remember hitting anything, but do remember the car moving toward the tree, then suddenly sitting in my stopped car. For about 6 months afterward I had auditory, olfactory and visual halucinations. Every once in a while I still see vivid lights (like neon) and shapes which lasts about 2-3 minutes. Right after the accident I had a cat-scan which showed nothing. They didnt even find that I had fractured my skull (later diagnosed by a neurologist). Since the accident, my reading skills have gone way down hill. I litterally have to pick apart each sentance and visually conceptualize it before I can move on to the next one. Could this be a result of the head injury? If so, what can I do to try and regain some of the ability I once had? Thanks in advance for your responses.

You poor thing! It is absolutely possible to have difficulty reading after you have a brain trauma like that. There are a few suggestions I have: 1) Visual therapy. Your eyes may be out of alignment which is causing you to have trouble reading, etc. Visual therapy basically trains your eyes to be back in alignment and is often used to treat dyslexia. It's a form of cranial manipulation that is often very helpful for people that have survived brain trauma. 3) I would also recommend you see a neurologist. The vivid lights might be an indicator of something like a migraine and should be checked out. I would investigate visual therapy as a first step, but regardless you need to get help. I swear by my craniosacral therapist after I had brain surgery in 2005. GOOD LUCK! Get your family and friends behind you as support. The only bad thing about visual therapy is its not often covered by insurance.
