First of all, what are ebooks? Ebooks or electronic books are digital forms of paper based books. So you don't have to carry heavy books everywhere you go. These ebooks come in various formats and require dedicated hardware (ebook readers like Amazon Kindle) to read them. Ebooks originally started as short instruction booklets or manual for the geeky kinds. Adobe's PDF format is very popular. There are thousands and thousands of ebook formats. These days everyone is hellbent in making a ebook format and an ereader for it. Ebooks also provide easy availability for old classics which sometimes are no longer available. And thanks to Project Gutenberg many of the old classics of Mark Twin, Charles Dickens, Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexander Dumas etc. (sorry if I left out your favourite authors name) are freely available for anyone interested to read.

People nowadays find it easier to read an ebook instead of paper based books because of the convenience it provides. (ebooks are better or paper based books are better is a rant for another day) you can carry a dozen and more ebooks in your memory card without a problem but carrying a dozen paper based books isn't a comfortable idea.

Authors and publishers have also started recognising this. Ok... Atleast some of the authors have - J.K.Rowling, the author of Harry Potter series have said that Harry Potter series would not be released as ebooks. Seriously, does that matter? NO. Ebooks for almost every book are available online, they might be in different format but that can be easily converted to a desired format via ebook converter. I read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in PDF format before buying the paperback. I'm not saying it's legal, just don't shout about it. But publishers and authors should understand/realise the importance of ebooks in current age - in case of Dan Brown's latest book : The Lost Symbol (it is an awesome book and quite a sequel to the series. If you haven't read it yet - read it) the ebook outsold the paperbased book. It was news and twitter trending topic for a few days. What I'm trying to say is that if Dan Brown and his publisher would have released The Lost Symbol only as paper based book it wouldn't have sold that much. Ebook might not replace paper based books but they are here to stay and they are getting popular and products like Amazon Kindle and Sony reader are required to rece them.
