Sony Portable Reader Digital readers are they only supported in the states.?
i was thinking of investing some money in a digital reader (amazon kindle, the sony reader, etc.) so that i would have a more portable option for my reading. However, i live in the cayman islands would i still have access to books via download?
The Kindle uses the Sprint cell phone network, so it is very unlikely. I don't know about the Sony, but both can probably be loaded through USB, but you're on your own in finding the books.

The amazon kindle is 399, it has free wireless access that you can download books, magazines and blogs. You can also access wikipedia, search through text and it has a built in dictionary.
The Amazon store has about 3 times more books than the sony store has.
The sony cost 299 it doesn't have wireless access, and it has no search function. I believe it also has a dictionary.
Both use the e-ink display - so they are even in that respect.
They both have thier own DRM technology so you can't buy a sony book and read it on the kindle or vice versa.
You can get free ebooks for both at the Guttenberg Project website, but these are only books that are no longer under copywright protection.. There are a lot of classics you can get for free.
Right now ebooks are just about expensive as paperback novels, and in some cases they cost even more.
The bad points to buying DRM ebooks:
You can't buy used ebooks
You can't lend your books to anyone
You can't sell your books
IT's very likely that in 10 years from now when your device no longer works, and you've gone through 2 personal computers your DRM license will no longer be any good, or even worse the DRM technology will change and will not be compatible with your device. So all the money you've spent is gone..
Also, you can't check out an ebook from the library.
In conclusion, I would love to own an Amazon Kindle, it would be very convenient and very cool to be able to look up a word on its dictionary, or further research what you want on Wikipedia.
What prohibits me from buying one is not just the initial cost, but the costs to keep feeding your device with new material.
However, if I took mass transportation to work every day, Or traveled frequently and had some time to kill in places that reading on an electronic device would be very convenient, then the cost would be worth it to me.
