Color Ebook Reader
What is the best ebook reader out there?
I'm looking for an ebook/PDF reader such as the Amazon Kindle. I want to use it to read PDF files (and TXT files, if possible). I have some PDF ebooks downloaded and I want to put all my school study notes and assignments on it as well. Over Christmas break, I'm going to take the time to scan all of my textbooks and convert them to PDF files so I don't have to lug around heavy textbooks everywhere I go.
What would be the best reader to use for this purpose? I don't care for WiFi, 3G, a physical keyboard or any fancy stuff. Just as long as it has a reasonable sized display and allows to change the font size and view images embedded into PDF files (might I add, in full color).
If you need a color display then your options are somewhat limited. Obviously the iPad, albeit pricey, has a great screen and can do lots of other things. The Nook Color is another contender, and costs much less than an iPad. Have a look on Amazon at the "Pandigital Novel" and other less well known brands.
The Kindle still doesn't have a color option at the moment.

A good eBook Reader, in color?
I'm trying to find a good eBook Reader that is in color, I found the Cruz one and another which was a little cheaper but I want to know which eBook Reader is better, or if the Cruz is worth it and why.... thanks!
Obviously if you want to spend $$$ there is the iPad,
The Nook Colour is another option and is much cheaper than the iPad. Nothing on colour from Amazon or Sony yet.

Color E Book Reader
Ipad vs kindle....?!?
I was thinking, many people have complained that using the ipad as a e-reader will hurt the eyes. However, the screen is bigger, has more memory and more features than the kindle. With the bright screen, to prevent strain of the eyes, couldn't you just put the brightness of the ipad at it's lowest, would that have the same effect as the kindle's e-ink technology? Plus books will be in colour and the distractions of the apps isn't a problem for me. Which one should I buy? (I already own an iPod touch if that helps, but would like a bigger screen for reading books).
Its probably a person choice, but I know even on the lowest setting the iPad would hurt my eyes very quickly if I were trying to read a novel on it.

Question for those who are interested in Fantasy Novels?
Okay, so I've been working on for the details for the young adult fantasy novel I'm writing for a couple weeks now. The story takes place on another world but it's pretty similar to our Earth. However, there are original animals, intelligent creatures, plants, etc. that I'm making up for the book as well. I'm still working on developing details for how the characters and other native beings are supposed to look.
So my question is this:
a) Do you guys prefer reading fantasy novels with characters whose appearance is about the same as ours (meaning, normal colored hair and eyes)
or
b) Do you guys prefer reading more anime/manga style fantasy novels where characters have really odd colored hair (e.g. green, blue, purple) and eyes (e.g.red, orange, etc.)
The results from this survey will just help me get a feel for what readers out there might prefer to see so I can then decide how I might want to design the appearances of my characters. Thanks to all who can help!

Which is better - The Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader or Barnes & Nobles nook?
Im looking into purchasing an ebook reader and are curious as to which is the best way to go, I like how Sony has the different colors, I like that Barnes and Noble you can shop for the books right from the reader its self (i dont know if the others have that option) If I buy a Sony Reader can I use Amazons site to get books or bn.com? or vice versa or does each one have to use their own site to receive the downloads? any advice would help!!!
The ebooks can not be read on each other, because all of them are competitors with each other and they have their ebooks protected.
Don't choose the Sony Reader. It doesn't have good content support, and quite a lot of people complain it is difficult to find books for it.
I've compared the Nook and the Kindle, so let me tell you my findings. From the official page of B&N, here is how the Nook compares with the Kindle:

Since Barnes and Noble page is only mentioning the advantage of the Nook over the Kindle, let me try to tell more about the benefit of the Kindle 2 over the Nook:
- There is no internet browser for the Nook. So even with Wi-Fi, you can only use it to purchase book. You cannot do searching in Google, Wikipedia, check email, etc., like what you can do with the Kindle.
- The Amazon Kindle has international free 3G wireless which covers over 100 countries. So even if you're in places like the UK or Australia, you can access the internet with the Kindle free of charge. The Nook has wireless only within the U.S., and is limited for use of buying books only
- The Kindle is available outside the U.S. (it ships to 176 countries), while the Nook only ship within the U.S. at this moment.
- The Kindle has text-to-speech function, so it can treat an ebook like audio book. This function is not present on the Nook.
- The price of ebooks for the Nook on Barnes and Nobles are more expensive than the ebooks on the Kindle. This can make quite a difference in long term, the price difference adds up as you buy more books.
- Amazon is already doing some change after the Nook is announced. They dropped the price of their International Kindle even further. And they released a PC software which can read their Kindle books. They also added native PDF support for their Kindle 2.
One more thing to be aware is that, at first glance you may think the Nook can read ebooks with color touch screen. But indeed the color touch screen is only a small screen beneath the greyscale eink screen, and seems it is only used to browse the cover of ebooks.
In my opinion, it is a tie between the Kindle and the Barnes and Noble. But if you may travel and you enjoy reading during your trip, you should go for the Kindle for sure. Moreover, I trust the Kindle will come up with some strategies very soon, like improving their lending book function. The Kindle is the biggest player in the ereader market right now, and I believe it will put enormous effort to hold its position. Finally, if you're an avid reader, price of ebooks will also be a big concern, as ebooks on the Nook are more expensive.

Just check up their homepage to see the latest price of the devices. The price is most up-to-date, and if there is any price change it will be reflected immediately on their homepage. BTW, the Nook seems to be in stock only in Feb 2010, so you'll not be able to get it this month...

Ebooks - Which Reader is Best?
Each ebook reader has its own advantages and disadvantages, and depending on your preferences, there is something for everyone. They key advantage to all readers is that they allow you to easily download books that you can read on the go wherever you may be.
The Amazon Kindle is probably the most well-known of the ebook readers. Amazon has recently introduced the Kindle 2, the newest version of its ebook reader. An attractive feature of the Kindle 2 is its sleek and slim design that allows it to be truly portable. It hardly takes up any room at all in one's purse or briefcase. Another advantage of the Kindle 2 is its ability to connect wirelessly to the Amazon store using Whispersync technology. This technology allows users to download books wherever they are, even if there is no wi-fi connection. With storage capacity of 1500 books, the Kindle will ensure that an avid reader is never without new material. At $259, the Kindle is one of the most reasonably priced ebook readers on the market.
The Sony Reader RPS-700 is more expensive than the Kindle by about $100 and only holds up to 350 titles. Of course, it is not likely that the average reader would really need to store more than that many books at any given time. Also, unlike the Kindle, the Sony Reader must be attached to a computer in order to download additional books, taking away some of the convenience of being able to get new reading material on a whim. This higher priced reader does also have several significantly useful features, including an LED backlight that allows you easily to read your ebooks wherever you are and whatever the lighting.
The IRex Digital Reader is priced significantly higher than many other ebook readers and is primarily focused on the business market, rather than on individual consumers who would purchase an ebook reader for personal use. Users of the IRex tend to like its touchscreen which is larger than that of other readers. It also has an easy interface for annotating and highlighting text, a feature that is more useful when it comes to reading business-related texts as opposed to reading a book for pleasure.
The COOL-ER is one of the least expensive ebook readers on the market today, but it serves its purpose well for those who are looking for an easy way to bring their reading material on the go. It weighs even less than the Kindle and is very easy to throw in a bag and bring anywhere, but it is not as easy to use as the Kindle or the Sony. On the positive side, the COOL-ER suits the more style-conscious reader as it comes in a variety of colors.
Finally, the Aztak Easy Reader seems like it may be the Kindle's strongest competitor, although it is more expensive at over $300. It weighs less (although it weighs more than the COOL-ER) and has similar storage capacity and similar user-friendly features and navigation.
In summary, there are plenty of options when it comes to choosing an ebook reader and it should not be too hard to find the right one for you.

Is there an ebook reader software that mimics e-ink (black on grey) to reduce eye strain with long documents?
I have a tablet PC and I read a lot of books in PDF format, but I find that it strains my eyes. I've seen the kindle, and I like how you can read black on grey to reduce fatigue. I was looking around for a PDF reading software that can do something similar. I understand that it's a special screen on the kindle that does that, but software that can change the background color of the pdf I am reading would work just as well for me. I've done some searching and all I can find is reviews about Kindle and Sony's Reader. Has anyone heard of a PDF reader I can download that is better on eye strain?
I've already tried Google. Yahoo answers is a last resort. The only thing that comes up on Google is product reviews for the Kindle or Sony reader.

There has been a rapid development in the e-reader world where many have just recognized the power of e-books, although rumors abound regarding Apple's plans for this field in which are as yet uninvolved. Apple are due a new product shortly and there has been a great deal of activity, both in development and verbally. All that remains to be seen is the form that the expected new product will take.
It is almost a given that e-reader capability will be incorporated but whether or not this will be the main focus of the product is unknown. It is highly unlikely, however, since Apple have not professed a great desire to enter the eBook reader market in recent months. Whether or not this is a subterfuge however, will be established only when the new product is unveiled. Will be it be a tablet with e-reader functionality, or an e-reader that can also do other things? The consensus is the former.
In a January 2008 media interview, founder Steve Jobs stated that the Amazon Kindle was not finding significant use by Americans and that Apple intended to enter the market with a new e-book reader that would serve their needs. He recently told the New York Times that Apple aren't interested in a single-purpose eBook reader, so there is a wealth of predictions of what Apples' new product will be.
While we are still waiting, it would make sense for Apple's planned new tablet to be released before Christmas, and even more likely that it will incorporate an eBook reader as part of a multi-purpose application platform. It has been heard that this will incorporate the iPhone operating system, either as currently or in a modified form. Some, however, are quoting the first quarter of 2010 for the main launch, with details of the hardware being released in advance of that to allow manufacturers to develop applications, as Apple did in 2007 with the iPhone.
The current buzz is that it will have a 9.6 inch color screen using OLED technology, although others have mentioned a 13 inch tablet. The rumors possibly arose from a leak earlier this year that LG were working on a 10 inch OLED touch-screen for a new Apple tablet. As it was described in article "How to Choose the Most Suitable e-Reader" (Digital Book Readers), the Kindle DX offers a 9.7 inch grayscale screen, and it has also been reported that 9.6 inch color touch-screens are being assembled in Taiwan for Apple.
This might or might not figure with the belief that Apple will focus on its e-reader capability with a $500 price tag, but others expect a launch at $800 with a more complex product offering e-book readability as only one of many of the capabilities that the reputed OLED product could also provide.
As discussed earlier, the Apple screen is said to be using OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology in the screen, similar to that used with TVs, and incorporating new touch software that allows the user to turn pages easily, and enlarge them with the use of two fingers, and also that it will be suitable for both books and newspapers. It is conceivable that the technology can enable press advertising to contain links that will enable the reader to directly access advertisers' websites. It has also been rumored that a low-cost subscription will be applied for access to newspapers and books, although the problems of price for downloaded products that has beset the music world might also intervene.
It is likely that the hardware prices being quoted are too high for a dedicated e-reader, and it is highly unlikely that Apple would fail to incorporate music and games technology into any new product. Whether this is fact or fancy remains to be seen, but what is fact is that the competition is not sitting around waiting. There will be a few new products in the stores this Christmas, and Apple's competition will be different to what it was when they began their development.
What is also true is that many people are awaiting the new product with a great deal of anticipation. Will it be a burst bubble, or will it blow the competition away? Naturally, Apple is saying little, but the iTunes store has just introduced a comic book called "Mayhem" which is currently available with one song from the store.
Is this an indication of the future?
