The Kindle or Nook Question Rages On

Kindle or Nook? Which eReader best fits your needs? This is not to say you have no other options – there are plenty – but purely from a book lover's perspective, the Amazon Kindle and  the Barnes and Noble Nook are the two best eReaders for persons who love to read.

The emphasis here is on "love to read." The Apple iPad, for instance, is a great little gadget that can double as an eReader, but is more suited for web browsing, checking emails, listening to music, and so on.

But for the pure joy and pleasure of reading, it has to be either the B&N Nook or the Amazon Kindle 3, which is the latest and greatest edition of the Kindle.

Both eReaders offer Wi-Fi connectivity for easy downloading of eBooks, as well as a 3G version off the same device for an additional $50.00. Not a necessary feature for most folks, in our opinion, though you may want it if you plan to download eBooks, or for web browsing while traveling if Wi-Fi connectivity is not available.

What we love about both of these eBook readers is the clear, non-glare display provided by E Ink® technology. Unlike the glossy glare of LCD displays such as those offered by computer monitors and devices such as the iPad, the Nook and Kindle present text and images comparable to clear printed pages.

Those are the basic similarities shared by the Nook and Kindle. There are numerous differences, however, and you will have to decide which features you prefer and which you can do without. For now, let's take a look at two areas where these two products take a different approach.

How big do you want your eLibrary to be?

How many bound books do you own? A few hundred? One thousand? Three thousand? How many books do you read in a month? Or in a year?

I consider myself a big reader. I always have a book with me wherever I go. But I don't have as much time to read as I would like. I would love to read a book a week, or around 50 books in a year, but that's not always possible.

So having a library of 3,500 electronic books (eBooks) that I can carry around with me is enough to last me a lifetime of reading. It would take me 70 years to read all the books I can carry on my Kindle 3 if I read about one book a week! And it would take me 30 years to read the 1,500 eBooks that I can fit onto my Nook!

It seems to me even the Nook's storage capacity can satisfy most readers. But if not, Barnes and Noble lets you purchase additional memory cards for your Nook to double, triple, or even quadruple the number of books you can fit onto your Nook.

Some readers will like that option for expanding. The Kindle 3 does not offer expandable storage capacity, but as already mentioned, the 3,500 eBook capacity that comes with the out-of-the-box Kindle 3 provides more than enough reading material for most folks.

Where do I go for my eBooks?

Another area where Amazon and Barnes and Noble take a different approach is the source from which you obtain your books. Amazon has become the most trusted online shopping store. It started out as a book seller but has evolved into a marketplace for just about anything you can think of.

But book-selling remains in Amazon's DNA, and when they developed their best-selling product, the Kindle eReader, they devised a way to make their enormous inventory of books available to the public in a convenient, less expensive digital download format.

Amazon created the Kindle Store, which offers eBooks in a proprietary format. This presents a stumbling block for some buyers. In developing their own eBook format rather than adopting ePub, the open eBook format used by public libraries, the Sony Digital Reader and the Nook, Amazon has alienated some readers who would like the option of borrowing books from their local libraries or downloading and purchasing from other eBook stores.

Most persons, however, find the Amazon collection of 750,000 books available from the Kindle Store for $9.99 or less sufficient. Add to that the option for using the Kindle to read an additional 1.8 million out-of-copyright books for free, and you can see how that kind of book availability is ample enough to meet the needs of virtually anyone who enjoys reading.

Nook or Kindle? You decide!

There is no doubt, the Kindle 3 and the B&N Nook are excellent eReaders, very likely the top two eBook readers on the market. The Kindle 3 enjoys a majority share of the market, and many consider it the best pure eReader available. But the Nook may offer more versatility or features that some buyers might like to have.

Other factors you should consider before making a buying decision include battery performance, syncing capability across multiple devices, ability to lend out eBooks to others, web browsing, listening to music, text-to-speech option, and several other features that the latest versions of the Nook and Kindle 3 possess.

The Ebook Reader Review (Electronic Ebook Readers)

By now you have probably heard a little about eBook readers and for some of you these may be an elusive technical product that makes you shiver with sadness. I say that because with the advent of eBook readers you will see the slow demise of the book as we know it. However this is not completely true because the eBook reader will not be for everybody and will not replace every book on the planet. Lets face it there are some books you really need to touch, feel and even smell to enjoy.

The joy of reading is a global pastime. Reading hightens the senses, ignites the imagination and passes the time when needed. For many the cost of reading is high. Not necessarily cost as in money but in space to store the precious books that you spend your hard earned money on. Many of us end up with a room full of books oozing into every nook and cranny straining space to the maximum.

In this world of technology the eBook is a godsend for avid readers. The problem of storing books has been resolved with the digital age all with huge advantages that goes beyond cost and storage.

An eReader is essentially a small computer that stores your books in digital format but without the bells and whistles of a computer. The most popular eReader allows you to do some web surfing, check your emails and download books straight to your eReader. But the best thing of all it is like reading a book. A regular computer will have a back light and it is the back light that will strain your eyes and affect your reading enjoyment. The eReader uses eInk and what this is is a screen that is just like that of a real book. The added bonus is you can increase font sizes if you are visually impaired or have tired eyes.

Sometimes the idea of being read to is quite appealing. An eReader that reads to you straight from the book (just like mine does) is brilliant. Furthermore if you choose you can listen to audio books and music from a quality eReader. All this making an eReader an appealing entertainment unit for the avid reader.

As an owner of the worlds most popular and least expensive eReader I have to say my reading habits have increased simply because of the choice I now allow myself simply because of the convenience. For example, I can have more than one book being read at a time. What I mean is I read according to my mood. It is no different to watching a program on TV, you watch 1 hour of a program every week picking up the threads the following week. Well reading more than one book at a time is the same concept except I read according to my mood. What makes it so simple with the eReader is I can go out for a coffee, start up my eReader and choose a book to read without carrying all my books with me.

One of the biggest problems for readers who travel is what books to pack. Books take up a huge amount of precious space in luggage. With an eReader you simply load all the books your hearts desire on your eReader and choose what you want to read when you want it.

eReaders are easy to use simply choose what you want to read and either upload using WIFI, 3G or via your computer. You can choose a book and be reading it in under 2 minutes. Faster than going out and buying a book.

There are literally thousands and thousands of books available for free or almost free. Many books are out of copyright that are now available to read on your eReader for free. You would be surprised the number of books out there. Authors also offer some of their books for free, the reason they do this is the give their new potential followers a "taste" of what is to come with their writing style, more of a try before you buy.

Should you choose to buy eBooks for your eReader you will find them substantially cheaper than that of the hard copies particularly if you take into account the cost of shipping when buying online.

Whilst the economics associated with money and space are a major draw card for using an eReader the environmental aspect cannot be overlooked. Each time you read an eBook you are saving precious resources and this has to be a major positive.

So if you have never heard of eReaders or ever wondered what one is now is the time to consider how you can change your reading habits and like me increase your joy of reading.

B&N Nook or regular books.?

soo i need some advice. ive been on the fence lately about buying an Ereader, and heres the main reason: i love reading books, but primarily i love collecting them. I have a huge bookshelf of hundreds of books, and i love adding news ones to the collection. then, someones like, can i borrow a book, and i take them to my library.

If i buy an ereader, i wont have that anymore. i mean my old books will always be there, but i wont have new ones to add in the future.

ON the other hand, ive heard ebooks save money when you buy the book itself, and now that im a college student, it would be more handy to have than buying tons of books and not having space for them.
Soo any suggestions. really what do you have to say about a nook (which ive heard is the best ereader) in response to having regular books?

I would rather have regular books because they're more personal and I'm so used to them. But having textbooks and books for school, not for collecting, would be a good idea for the nook, and then you can collect books that you would enjoy reading. The only problem I would probably have is not being able to flip through the pages normally, which can be easier than having to press arrow keys over and over again.

Top ten gadgets predictions for 2011

The following are predictions and trends for what 2011 has in store for the electronics/gadgets buyer. As the end of the year approaches, it's time to take a look at what's in store for the future of technology:

Prediction #1: Projectors will continue to grow in popularity. Technology for projectors has made it preferable to choose a home theater projector over a television, when it comes to filling up space. Despite the economic downturn, projectors have been selling hotter than ever. The reason? Probably because no one wants to spend 10 dollars on a movie ticket anymore!
Projectors are also getting smaller. Something that can fit in your front pocket can now display your business presentation on the wall.

Prediction #2: Blu-ray will slowly but steadily get closer to becoming mainstream in the home theater market. More and more catalogue titles are being released every day, and price reductions have enabled unit shipments to increase rapidly. 2011 will finally be the year when Blu-ray will take the place of DVDs in the mainstream market.

Prediction #3: HD gadgets will grow in popularity. These days you can buy a 720p television for under $500. Camcorders with 1080p capability are becoming the new standard for home video. Trends indicate that most consumer video gadgets will soon be high-def.

Prediction #4: The advent of 3D television will not gain as much traction as their developers would like; since manufacturers are pushing for it more than consumers. With very little 3D content currently available, and given that only a handful of 3D TV's are on the market, it's better to wait and decide whether 3D will go down in history as a gimmick, or rise up as the wave of the future.

Prediction #5: Google Android, the internet search giant's foray into the mobile device operating systems market, has been steadily gaining momentum, and will continue to rise in popularity.

Google's Nexus One smartphone is one of the most iconic consumer electronics launches of the year, as its integration with Google software services freed internet shoppers from wireless carriers' service contract stranglehold. Many other devices that use Google's Android OS are being released, helping Google get closer to the top of the mobile OS market.

Prediction #6: Tablet Computers will gain in popularity- many large manufacturers are already coming out with their own take on Apple's iPad, which has already sold 60 million units.
There is already a market for dedicated eReaders, and people are realizing that a tablet PC is more practical for browsing digital literature than dedicated devices. Apple's iPad has already taken a chunk out of this market, with competitors seeking to emulate Apple's success to follow.

Prediction #7: Solid State Drives will increase in prominence. This technological trend is accompanied by an annual 50% decline in raw flash material costs, while capacities continue to double at the same rate. As a result, flash-based solid-state drives are becoming increasingly popular in markets such as notebook PCs and sub-notebooks for enterprises, Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPC), and Tablet PCs for the healthcare and consumer electronics sectors. Major PC companies have now started to offer such technology.

Prediction #8: Consumers will be going after energy-efficient gadgets. As people become more concerned about the environment, and technology for such products increases, the proliferation of energy-efficient and green products will increase tenfold. Solar technology has been growing by leaps and bounds lately, with such products as solar-powered battery chargers, and solar cell phone batteries. Solar panels can even be seen on bags, or the windows of buildings!

There have also been more eco-friendly items turn up like wooden casings for iPods and cell phones. Consumers are demanding these items and it's a sure bet that we'll see more like them in the coming year.

Prediction #9: Apps! In 2011, you won't be able to turn the corner without bumping into a device that supports apps. More and more smartphones, eReaders, televisions, Blu-ray players, and other consumer products are utilizing apps. What started out as an iPhone gimmick will soon change the way we perform most electronic tasks.

Prediction #10: Streaming multimedia and interconnected devices will be ever-present throughout 2011, from wireless-enabled home theater components to DVD players that support mobile TV broadcasts. As such, dozens more potential distribution channels just opened up to businesses, as did the opportunity to extend the life and reach of any viral video marketing piece.
