Carrying currency/travellers cheque to japan?
I am an Australian traveling on my first trip to Japan, and I don't know how safe Japan is.
I'm think of taking all cash for travel to Japan. It will be concealed in a internal pouch underneath my shirt. Should I invest in some traveller's cheques? Whats your experience carrying currency?
How do travellers cheques work? Do I buy cheques in Yen or in AUD? If I purchase something do I get change?
Hope to hear for you soon.
Cheers,
Seno.
Hi! Mr. Safety,
Japan is very safe, if you feel better carrying an internal pouch do it but I see no use because is quite rainy and you will sweat your shirt (unless you carry a lot of money... I rather carry a credit card).
I use to take half my money in cash (USD in my case) and the other in traveler checks(USD) as a tourist and leave them at the hotel safety box.
If you stay in a tourist hotel in the same place they can change your check to currency, is quite the same if you go out and look for a bank (if you do so, don't forget to carry the address you will be staying on because they will ask for it).
Mind that all japanese banks close by 2:00 pm. or so (even ATMS).
Don't take american express cards (a lot of places did not accepted them).
And hotels have safety boxes use them (once I had one in our room, quite funny).
RELAX AND HAVE A GOOD TIME

international traveling- alternative to safety pouch worn under shirt?
i dont think it would be very comfy- yet i realise the importance of NOT losing your passport
a lot of the clothes i have are form fitting and if i wor something under them it would show.
also any other international travel tips would be appreciated ! thanks!
When I travel I use small messenger type bags that I can carry across my front. That way I can see and feel it, and they usually have a lot of zippers and pockets, so its not easy for a person to get into.
