Wireless/Portable internet?

Your Question
Wireless/Portable Internet?
Can someone explain to me how it works? I'm thinking about getting a laptop and I'm really stumped O_O;; So, do I have to 'buy' portable internet? Will there be a monthly charge for it? I know it sounds a bit stupid but I really don't know...
And/or can i connect it at home and share the connection using a modem with my PC? It would be nice if someone can help me out and answer my questions! :)

There are several popular ways:

1) get broadband at home, and put a wireless router ("Wi Fi") on it e.g. free with most BT deals. This gives good wireless coverage around the home, and makes it easy to share your connection with several computers.

2) use Wi Fi in other places; sometimes free, often charged; fairly limited range around each hotspot - common in city centres, not so much elsewhere.

3) if you mean really portable like your mobile phone, then you need a 3G "dongle" that plugs into a USB port. Most of the mobile networks do them now, with a range of deals depending on (i) how much you'll use it; (ii) whether you're prepared to sign a contract; and (iii) if you're happy to pay for the dongle.

3G can be convenient, and the headline claims in the ads are quite fast; but in reality it will be much slower than broadband through your phone line (or cable); probably also more expensive. If you just do a little surfing, cost won't be too bad; but if you do lots (or download songs / movies, big email etc) then it can get very high.

If you're really techy, you can put a 3G dongle into the back of some special routers, to then share the connection with several computers... but that's not usually the best option for most people (expensive and slow compared to others).

Can i share my portable memory stick on my wireless network?

I can shar everything else including the printer but am unable to find a way to plug the stick in on my main pc and share it. Is it possible to do it?

Yes it should share the same way you share anything. Right click on the drive, select "Sharing and Security" then share it. If you share the root, you will get a warning, but can do it anyway.

For more powerful sharing options including the ability to set more granular security, in winodws explorer, go to "Tools", "Folder Options", select the "View" tab, and in advanced settings, uncheck the "Use Simple File Sharing" box.

Bring your phone to a friends house that has a normal land line and make sure it works and rings.

If it does, then the problem has to be with Time Warner, so give them a call and set up a repair visit.

YOU are probably the best person to start marketing the product since it was you who built it and it is you who knows the security market. You can start by using your own contacts to present it to potential buyers. Perhaps all you really need to do is train a salesperson (or 2?) to work for you if you don't have the time to do it yourself. Somebody who can go out and knock on doors for you that knows the product as well as you do after you train them.
